Juicing for Health with Multiple Sclerosis

Well, my wife and I were introduced to the documentary Sick, Fat and Nearly Dead a few weeks ago and it really made an impact on us. We had been discussing juicing for health and had talked about a juice fast to "reboot" our bodies. Both of us know that our bodies are full of toxins, waste and other things that are causing our bodies to not work properly. So, today is the first day of the beginning of incorporating juice into our diet. We have tried this before but not with the research, information and support we have now. Over the past week my wife has bought a new juicer, created a 10 day juice plan, and shopped for all the nutritious fruits and veggies to make the juices.

Today we drank a combination of kale, ginger, celery, apples, lemon, and cucumbers. I have to say that I wasn't excited about how I thought this juice would taste, but it isn't that bad. We both downed 20 oz of this "green" juice this morning and I really am full. We will be drinking 4-6 glasses of juice a day along with plenty of water, coconut water, detox tea and homemade almond milk at night to carry us through with a full feeling. I will try to post the juices, weight loss and a general feeling as we go through the next 10 or so days. We are both very excited about detoxing our body and seeing how our health changes over the next few weeks.

I have been following your blog for some time now, I always feel inspired and a sense of camaraderie when I read what you write. I am a caregiver of ten years, and only in the last year have things changed with my husbands MS in a way that really impacts his need for more help from me.
I was so excited to read this post. We watched the documentary a few months ago and have been talking about a juice fast. We are not quite there yet, but I look forward to hearing how it goes for both of you.
Thanks for sharing, it truly helps to make the connection with others.

I just found your blog today. I also watched the same documentary and I have MS. So excited to see your wife's results. I am planning on doing it myself soon. Have you found it to be expensive to buy the fruits and vegetables, that's the one thing I am trying to figure out at the moment.

Hey Megan, this whole juice thing has definitely been an adventure so far. I will keep posting about the experience, but yes, the juicing has been a little expensive. We have found a few places to purchase the produce cheaper, and will probably find more ways to cut costs as we juice more. I will post more about it as we juice more days. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello. I also have MS. I was diagnosised last year in September 2011. That is when I had my first exaccerbation. I thought about juicing then but I didn't. This year, I had another exaccerbation in Feburary 2012. I was in the hospital for 6 days. I gained so much weight from the steriods that I couldn't fit any of my clothes anymore. I decided to start just in September 2012. I could not believe how wonderful my body felt after a week. I started on September 3rd. I was 186 pounds when I started. I had gained 45 pounds from the steroids. Currently, I'm down 23 pounds.
I feel a lot better now and I've even lost most of the weight.

I began my journey to try and figure out ways that would help me feel better. This has worked for me. It is definately a lifestyle change. I don't look at it as a diet. I feels great to feel somewhat normal again!!!

Hi, I'm 31 and also have r/r MS..over 10 years now. I've been strongly considering juicing however, I'm concerned about weight loss. I don't want to lose however, at this point I feel as though juicing is my only option...I do not medicate. Ideas??

Hi Kathy, juicing is definitely a great option for better health. My wife and I both felt great after our juice fast, and were amazed at how great many of the juices tasted. As far as weight loss, my wife lost a few pounds but I lost 10 in one week. We were strictly juicing, so no smoothies or other foods added in. If your fear is weight loss, there are plenty of smoothies and other options you could add in so you don't have to worry about that. If you have any specific questions you are welcome to shoot me an email at mywifehasms@gmail.com.

My boyfriend and I also watched the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. We have been juicing over a year now. We both love the energy we get from juicing the green veggies. Over all we both feel tremendously better. My boyfriend is 47 with MS and is feeling good with minimal symptoms. He doesn’t wake up stiff in the morning and has more energy. We also research veggies that help detox the liver such as zucchini, kale, dandelion, and beets. Most MS meds are hard on the liver. We research veggies that reduce inflammation such as ginger, berries, broccoli, tomatoes, and dark leafy greens. We get turmeric at the Indian market and that is a great liver detoxifier and anti-inflammatory. Now we are looking into nutrient synergy, which is when you combine two or more veggies combination. Nutrient synergy boosts the effect of the veggies. We also read about and watched the documentary on The Gerson Therapy. Dr. Max Gerson did great research on juicing and healthy eating. My boyfriend and I have learned medication helps, but we need to also heal our bodies by providing it with nutrient dense food. Juicing goes straight to your blood stream and cells. I do not have an auto immune disease, but he is the love of my life and we are on this journey together.
